Bamboo School Reconstruction
PROJECT TYPE

LOCATION
Nepal
In the aftermath of the 2015 Nepal earthquake which exposed devastating structural flaws in local infrastructure, this project proposes a resilient new structural system for the reconstruction of a school in a remote area in Nepal. Navigating the severe logistical challenges of transporting heavy building materials through mountainous terrain, the design turns to bamboo, which is a highly accessible local resource. Our design rethinks its structural integrity by anchoring the lightweight bamboo framework into a robust, solid base. This hybrid approach drastically reduces transportation costs while creating a safe, seismically conscious learning environment that honours local materiality and construction realities.
